In a hurry? Here’s a quick overview to save time:
Hen-House Decks earned second place in NADRA’s 2025 Limitless Under 200k category. The deck combines multi-level transitions, custom metal railing panels, and a timber roof structure. The project resolved a roof clearance issue that shaped both the elevation and final proportions of the space.
Creative Coordination Between Layout, Structure, and Materials

Hen-House Decks received second place in the Limitless Under 200k category of NADRA’s 2025 competition during the 16th Annual Deck Awards Celebration in Clearwater Beach. The project included a complex layout with multi-level surfaces, detailed inlay patterns, and a custom roof structure supported by rough-sawn timbers. The placement reflects how the team organized architectural features within a coordinated outdoor living environment.
The pattern transitions required consistent geometry across the deck and down the staircases, which influenced how each level connected to the next. The roof structure introduced another layer of review because it needed to align with both the deck elevation and the home’s architecture. The evaluation considered how these elements were resolved through structural decision-making rather than visual design alone.
The project succeeded because the team chose to lower the central deck section to provide the headroom the roof required instead of keeping the entire surface at one elevation and forcing a roof connection that would not meet clearance needs. The original height created a clear constraint because the roof could not attach to the house without conflicting with existing lines on the structure. The adjusted elevation provided room for the roof structure while maintaining alignment with the surrounding board patterns. The decision also controlled how the multi-level transitions interacted with the railing and lighting components.
The completed space shows cohesive movement from one level to the next with consistent pattern alignment throughout. The railing panels match the layout while maintaining clear sightlines across the deck. The timber roof structure sits at a height that supports both headroom and proportion relative to the home. These physical outcomes explain why the project received recognition for coordinated planning and execution in a complex design environment.
